An ordinary young woman,Frankie Paige (Patricia Arquette), is affected by mysterious wounds called Stigmata. When a Catholic Priest, Father Andrew Kiernan (Gabriel Byrne), comes to investigate the so called "miracle", he discovers this woman may be possessed by someone...or something...His investigation is riddled with questions as he is torn between helping Frankie and revealing the discovery of a long-lost Gospel that would spell disaster for the future of the Catholic church.
